STOP THE PROGRESSION Mission

Empowering Individuals with Scoliosis, Postural Deficits, and Back Pain Through Education, Awareness, and Biofunctional Pattern Integration

Consider the Whole Body, Not Just The Spine

The first goal of Stop the Progression is simple: to educate and equip individuals with practical tips and strategies to better understand and manage their scoliosis, posture, and pain. While this education can make a meaningful difference in daily posture and body awareness, it is not a substitute for medical treatment.
Scoliosis is a complex condition, and the spine itself should be evaluated and treated by a scoliosis-trained healthcare professional (Shroth Physical Therapists are the BEST!) who can provide individualized care. While curves can be categorized into specific curve types, your curve is truly unique to you based on (but not limited to) the apex, Cobb angle, amount of axial rotation and torsion, type of scoliosis, and other health, structural and environmental factors.

Where STOP THE PROGRESSION fits in is after or alongside that treatment. At its core is Biofunctional Pattern Integration (BPI)—a unique, multisystem approach designed to restore balance, improve proprioception, and retrain functional movement patterns that are often diminished in individuals with scoliosis and postural asymmetry.

Originally developed to help athletes such as cheerleaders, gymnasts, and dancers—who have a higher incidence of postural imbalance—BPI has proven just as effective for non-athletes looking to move with greater ease, stability, and confidence in everyday life.

STOP THE PROGRESSION is here to help individuals better understand their bodies, build postural awareness, and support their treatment journey—so they can take an active role in their long-term health.

Small Changes With Consistency Can Make a Big Impact

  • From a professional interest to a personal mission.

Scoliosis began as a professional interest but became a personal mission the day my daughter was diagnosed.
I’m Melinda, a Schroth Trained physical therapist with over twenty years of orthopedic experience. Throughout my career, I’ve worked with a wide range of individuals—from infants with torticollis to competitive cheerleaders and people navigating both acute and chronic back pain. Across these groups, one pattern stood out: a high incidence of postural asymmetry and scoliosis.
While I was able to help many patients improve, I quickly realized that achieving meaningful, lasting change—especially in curve reduction and posture—required a much deeper understanding of scoliosis and its complexities. That realization marked a turning point in my professional journey.
When scoliosis became part of my own family’s story, my work took on new urgency and purpose. I pursued specialized training in PSSE Schroth to address the 3D nature of scoliosis. When combined with Biofunctional Pattern Integration and pain reduction strategies, you get a multisystem approach to improve functional movement, proprioception, balance, and empower individuals to take an active role in their health so they can enjoy the activities they love.

  • Pain Pattern Awareness — Learn how to recognize myofascial pain versus other pain sources and discover effective, practical strategies to help manage it.
  • Movement and Balance Self-Assessment — Identify areas where movement is restricted, strength is limited, or balance is unsteady, and learn safe, non–curve-specific strategies to address these areas.
  • Guidance on Next Steps — Get clear insight into when seeking support from a Schroth-trained physical therapist may be right for you.
  • Foundational Movement Training — Access the first two tiers of Biofunctional Pattern Integration (BPI) to build functional movement patterns, enhance balance, and improve proprioception—no matter your curve type.
  • Empowerment Through Knowledge — Understand how scoliosis impacts posture and movement so you can become an active participant in your care and work more effectively with your healthcare team.

The Biofunctional Back Pain Course (Coming Soon!)

Living with back pain can be overwhelming. It often touches every part of daily life—how you move, breathe, sleep, and function. Many people spend years searching for answers, trying one thing after another, without fully understanding the “why” behind their pain. This course was created to help you start exploring that “why” with clarity, support, and guidance.

This is not a quick fix or a treatment program. It’s an educational course designed to help you become a detective in your own life—to look closely at everyday habits, movement patterns, and environmental factors that may be contributing to your pain. By identifying these patterns, many people find ways to reduce their pain levels, and in some cases, even eliminate their pain when the driving factors are addressed.

You’ll learn how breath, the diaphragm, and rib mechanics play a powerful role in how your body responds to pain. You’ll also explore movement, posture, and other key concepts from the Posture Course to help restore mobility, improve balance, and support your spine in a smarter, more sustainable way.

Developed by a Schroth-trained physical therapist with advanced training in posture, breathing mechanics, and functional movement, this course provides a structured and thoughtful framework to help you understand your pain better and take active steps toward relief.

While we can’t guarantee pain will disappear completely, we can give you the tools, education, and strategies to create real, meaningful change in how you experience and manage it.

  • Supportive Education — Understand that managing back pain is a process. While some may experience significant improvement, the goal is to empower you with tools to lower pain levels and improve quality of life.
  • The “Detective Mindset” — Build the skills to look closely at your daily life and identify potential sources or triggers that may be making your pain worse.
  • Breath, Diaphragm, and Rib Mechanics — Explore how breathing patterns and rib mobility can influence pain and movement, and how gentle strategies can help calm your nervous system.
  • Myofascial Pain Awareness — Learn to recognize myofascial pain and how it differs from other pain sources, along with practical strategies to help manage it.
  • Foundational Movement Training — Access the first three tiers of the Biofunctional Pattern Integration (BPI) program to improve mobility, posture, and balance at a pace that meets your body where it is.
  • Self-Assessment Skills — Discover how to identify areas of tension, weakness, or imbalance that may be contributing to your pain experience.
  • Expert Insight — Developed by a Schroth-trained physical therapist with advanced understanding of posture, movement, and breathing mechanics.
  • Important: This course does not replace the care of a trained healthcare professional. It can be used in conjunction with in-person treatment or as a supportive tool following care, helping you continue the process of understanding and managing your pain more effectively.
